یکی از این دو حالت است: اول این است که شما انسانی را نابود [اعدام] می‌کنید که خانواده، وابستگان یا دوستانی در این دنیا ندارد. پس او نه از آموزش برخوردار بوده و نه از راهنمایی، نه ذهن او تیمار شده و نه قلب‌اش. بنابراین شما به چه حقی چنین یتیم بی‌نوایی را می‌کشید؟ شما او را مجازات می‌کنید چون عدم بلوغ‌اش او را روی زمین نگاه داشته: بدون تنه، بدون شاخه، بدون حمایت. او را وادار می‌کنید جریمه‌ی انزوایی که او را در آن قرار داده‌اید بپردازد. هیچ‌کس به او نیاموخت که بداند چکار می‌کند؛ این مرد در نادانی زندگی کرده است؛ تقصیرکار خودش نبود که سرنوشت‌اش بود. شما یک بی‌گناه را نابود می‌کنید.

حالت دیگر این است که این مرد خانواده‌ای دارد. آیا فکر می‌کنید ضربه‌ی مهلک [اعدام کردن] او را به تنهایی مجروح خواهد کرد؟ آیا پدر، مادر یا فرزندان او رنج نخواهند کشید؟ شما با کشتن او، خانواده‌ی او را مجروح می‌کنید و بنابراین بی‌گناهان را مجازات می‌کنید. مجازاتی بیمارگونه و کور…

هر کدام از این دو حالت که باشد، بی‌گناهی هدف قرار می‌گیرد.
