مجازات‌های زمینی – چهار

من فکر می‌کنم نهادِ «مجازاتِ مرگ» این تصور که حاکمیت مالک حیات مردم است را تقویت می‌کند. چیزهای مختلفی بر ضد مجازات مرگ می‌توان گفت، اما یکی از مرتبط‌ترین نکته‌ها به بحث ما این است که قدرت حاکمیت برای نابود کردن عامدانه‌ی زندگی‌ بی‌خطر (حتی گناه‌کار) ابراز این خواسته‌ی پنهان است که به حکومت اجازه داده شود هرکاری که دلش می‌خواهد با «زندگی» انجام دهد.  بی‌رحمی موجود در مجازات مرگ مشابه سبعیت جنگ است.

I also think that the institution of capital punishment strengthens the sentiment that the state owns the lives of the people. Many things can be said against capital punishment, but one of the most relevant in our context is that the state’s power deliberately to destroy innocuous (though guilty) life is a manifestation of the hidden wish that the state be allowed to do anything it pleases with life. The ruthlessness of capital punishment is of a piece with that of war.
